Grading Guidelines

When we meet to discuss your final grade for the course during finals week, I will use these guidelines to determine your overall grade. You should be referring back to them over the course of the semester to consider whether your performance is in line with your desired course grade. If a gradation of (+)/(-) is warranted, we will discuss that.

 

A:

  • You have missed no more than one assignment deadline of any kind, including blog assignments.
  • All out-of-class essays fall within the A to B range.
  • In-class essays show an ability to apply and extend strategies discussed in class.
  • You have taken all chances to make substantial revisions to any assignment for which revision was offered.
  • You have been an active and efficient participant in all peer review sessions.
  • Your final portfolio includes all required assignments and a cover letter that clearly identifies and provides specific evidence of your major area(s) of growth over the course of the semester.
  • You have established clear, consistent, and appropriate habits of communication with me and your classmates in person and online.
  • You have missed no more than two classes.

 

B:

  • You have missed no more than three assignment deadlines of any kind, including blog assignments.
  • All out-of-class essays fall within the B to C range.
  • In-class essays show an ability to apply strategies discussed in class.
  • You have substantially revised two assignments for which revision was offered.
  • You have been an active participant in at least two peer review sessions.
  • Your final portfolio includes all required assignments and a cover letter that identifies and provides some evidence of your major area(s) of growth over the course of the semester.
  • You have established clear and appropriate habits of communication with me and your classmates in person and online.
  • You have missed no more than two classes.

 

C:

  • You have missed no more than four assignment deadlines of any kind, including blog assignments.
  • All out-of-class essays received passing grades.
  • In-class essays show some awareness of strategies discussed in class, even if they have not been applied fully.
  • You have revised one assignment for which revision was offered.
  • You have been an active participant in at least one peer review session.
  • Your final portfolio includes all required assignments, though the cover letter may not explain fully your overall progress this semester.
  • You have displayed an ability to communicate appropriately with me and your classmates in person and online.
  • You may have missed more than two classes.

 

F: You have failed to meet the minimum requirements for a C and will need to retake the course.
